Meet the Team

  • Matt and Jen Johnson

Matt and Jen have been working for Varsity Yearbook for 4 years. Before that, Matt taught yearbook and photography for 13 years, while Jen was at home with their 3 kids. They both love yearbooks and helping schools make their best yearbook ever.

  • Makena Busch

Makena Busch, CJE, advises the Pantera yearbook at Mead HS in Spokane, WA, where she teaches digital media, graphic design, and yearbook. JEA named Busch a Rising Star in 2019, a Special Recognition Adviser in 2021, and a Distinguished Adviser in 2023.

Her yearbooks have earned several state and national awards including a CSPA Gold Crown, NSPA Pacemaker, and Best of Show award. Busch is crazy enough to coach track in the spring, thinks coffee runs through her veins at this point, and isn’t afraid to tell you the cringest dad jokes she knows.

  • Justin Daigle

Justin Daigle, MJE, advises the Reflections yearbook at Brighton High School in Colorado. Over the last 18 years, his students’ publications have earned state and national awards including CSPA Gold and Silver Crowns and NSPA Pacemakers, and NSPA Best of Show trophies. Daigle has been honored with the 2009 Colorado Student Media Association (CSMA) Teacher of the Year as well as JEA Rising Star in 2010, Special Recognition (2014) and Distinguished (2016) Yearbook Adviser of the Year, and Medal of Merit (2022). CSPA honored him with the Gold Key in 2020. Daigle is the current JEA Vice President.

  • Mike Simons

Mike Simons advises Tesserae, the yearbook at Corning-Painted Post High School in upstate New York. The past president of the Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers’ Association, Simons was named the JEA H.L. Hall Yearbook Adviser of the Year in 2021. His students have won numerous CSPA Gold Crowns and NSPA Pacemakers, including honors for their video and digital content. He is a regular presenter and instructor at workshops, conventions and camps nationwide, with a special emphasis on theme and photography, and considers coffee a food group.

  • Kyle Lewis

Kyle Lewis, CJE, is the Director of Brand, Campaigns and Customer Engagement at Varsity Yearbook, and is responsible for “the look” that you see most places — especially Portfolio. Lewis was design editor for both newspaper and yearbook in high school — and was a college publications kid, too. With a degree in Journalism Graphics, he worked at a newspaper company for 10 years before re-joining the world of yearbook in 2017.
